RACE NEWS:

Mar 28th – Michael Schott Memorial Circuit Bike Race (Marblehead, MA)

Ken Thoman, Kurt Maw, Eric Whewell and Tim Curley started off the cycle season early with this kick off event on a very hilly, very cool (30s) and very windy course on Marblehead Neck. For those that read Ken’s post race write up (super re-cap Ken) there was a lot of jockeying around with Team Threshold as Ken stayed with a 3-rider lead pack for 6 laps and hung on for a 13th place overall in a group sprint finish. But would the rest of Team Comp be there with him? Meanwhile, Eric had another race perspective as he was pushing to stay up in the peleton hoping to be ready to lead Ken out for the final lap and Ken’s explosive sprint, but Eric would hit his limit before the final lap came around. Kurt a shoe-in to also be a potential lead out for Ken, never got the chance as he dumped before the race even started (loosening his bars and seat to various angles), then got clipped wheel to wheel that sent him out the back of the peleton on the first lap and spent the entire race with one other rider behind the main pack (great effort to stay on the main pack lap). Tim Curley, coming off a 2009 season that ended with a broken collar bone, looked good throughout the race but similar to Kurt, lost the main field and had to make due as long as possible. In the end all 4 riders road apart, Orange & Black spread all over the road. Congrats Ken on the top 15 finish. We’ll work on the team cohesiveness in the next race………..

Mar 27th – Candia 5k (Candia, NH)

Cheryl Alden kicked some butt at the Candia NH ( “impromptu” on her part) 5K. With a long run scheduled she decided last minute to run to the race, race, and run home. So she ran to the race start (late), was registering as the race gun went off, started behind everyone, chased after the 99 starters, ran down 91 of the 99, and surprised everyone by coming in 1st overall female and 8th overall with a time of just over 22 minutes. Now that’s a Rockstar effort.

Mar 27th – Ford Oceanside 70.3 (San Diego, CA)

Nancy Thomson rocked the west coast with a PR 5:21 half Ironman that included a first exit out of the water in her age group and a PR run of 1:49. She didn’t hit the podium, but the numbers were impressive. Great race summary sent out by Nancy on Monday. It was a “Superwoman” effort. Congrats Nan.
