UPCOMING CHARITY EVENTS (Comp Mission Statement, Article IV, Participate/Donate in Charitable Events)

SEPT 12TH - A REASON TO RIDE (DANVERS, MA)

(From Dennis Connelly) For those interested, and not otherwise going to Narragansett, the Reason to Ride brain cancer charity ride is this Sunday: http://www.gratefulnation.org/site/TR/Events/TR-AReasontoRide?fr_id=1150&pg=entry. I’ll be in New York this year bringing my son to school so will miss it, but I strongly recommend it to anyone that would like a 50 mile ride through many of your more beautiful north shore towns. It’s organized by Tom DesFosses, a brain cancer survivor and friend of my father’s from their volunteer work on The Friendship of Salem. In only its third year, it’s very well run, well attended, and full of goodies for only a $50 ante. Fuddruckers cooked cheeseburgers for everyone last year and they look poised to do it again. They raffled a road bike and sox tickets (which I won) and other good stuff.

SEPT 18TH - TDD TRIATHLON (DOUGLAS, MA)

(From Elaine Vescio) The second annual TDD Triathlon is taking place on September 18, 2010 in Douglas, MA. As most of you know, it's a memorial race for Don and my triplet sons (Tyrus, Dante, and Daniel), and a fundraiser for the UMass Memorial Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It's a really fun event held in a gorgeous state park, and we would love to have as many Comp Racing folks as possible join us in this celebration either as a competitor or a volunteer. It's very family friendly. We even have a magician perform during the race to keep the folks at the venue entertained. Last year, they were especially entertained when his trained pig escaped.

For more information about the race, please visit: http://sites.google.com/a/firm-racing.com/home/tdd-triathlon-start-8-00-a-m or www.firm-racing.com

To volunteer, email me at evescio@mpstraining.com. We are looking for swim angels, bike and run course marshals, water station volunteers, race venue volunteers, etc.

SEPT 25TH - DANNY OATES MEMORIAL 5K ROAD RACE AND 2.5 K WALK (BEDFORD, MA)

September 25, 2010, Lt. Eleazer Davis School, Bedford MA www.dannyoates5k.com

(From Lisa Freed) Our 16th race this year is again part of the Bedford Day Celebration. The Danny Oates Memorial Race was founded to pay tribute the beloved son of Robert and Judy Oates of Bedford, MA. Bob is a retired member of the Bedford Fire Department and member of various civic organizations; their son Brian currently serves as one of our local firefighters. All proceeds of the race fund the Danny Oates Memorial Scholarship. The race has added over $38,000 to the fund since 1998 and in 2010 gave out over $9,000 in scholarships. Back by popular demand- Kids Fun run during the race for ages 3-10!! For more info, contact Lisa Freed, 781-275-0494 or lafreed@verizon.net

(do you have a race or event coming up that you want others to get interested in? Send it so I can post it!)

RACE NEWS:

SEPT 5TH – DISNEY HALF MARATHON (Anaheim, CA)

(From Disney Dawnie and the Incredibles – too funny as usual) Well Team Comp. represented this weekend on the West Coast where else but at Disney of course!!! - and what fun we had. First, The Incredibles, running as a family, ran a 5k on Sat. through both Disneyland and Disneyland California - we were so proud of the kids - especially Rhiana who hates hates hates to run but managed to hold her own and only walked thru the two water stops despite her brother's protest and begging to just let him go ahead.

Next up was the 1/2 marathon on Sun. which Bob (aka Mr. Incredible) and I (dressed as what else TIGGER complete with tigger striped mens swimming tights, tigger tail, tigger head-band and yup my black and orange Team Comp. bra!) needed to complete the Coast to Coast Challenge. The weather was perfect and we settled into a nice rhythm by mile 2 but at mile 4 Tigger discovered he didn't want to run without "Pooh” (aka I pulled an Uta Pippig completely out of the blue!!!) --- I was completely embarrassed but in true Black & Orange spirit when Bob asked me what I wanted to do (mind you I was still running full steam ahead - hmmm that wasn't a good choice of words!) I realized under that Tigger exterior was Mrs. Incredible so I replied "nothing you can do now just keep running". Fast forward to Mile 10 - Bob asks me "so do you want to pick up the pace as planned" ... to which I replied "well, I am running with two pieces of sand paper pressed up against my butt cheeks" - to which he said " I will take that as a no" --- so we just kept on truckin! --- we finished with some great pacing by Mr. Incredible in a respectable 1:40 putting us at 326 out of 12,360 runners ... Individually Bob got 26th out of 519 in his age group and 270 out of 4,504 men and I came in at 9 out of 979 in my age group, 57 out of 7,854 women and some serious chaffing wounds where the sun don't shine!!!

The race was very well organized and there was plenty of entertainment out in Anaheim to keep you going - and of course the medals just rock!!! I love Disney - but who didn't know that!!!!
