Jolly Jaunt 5k for Special Olympics
As most of you who know me are aware, I am also physically challenged and am fully aware of the lack of organized sporting activities that are available to both the physically and mentally challenged. For that reason, the Special Olympics is very important to me personally. I am AGAIN participating in the Danvers Jolly Jaunt because I believe in the highly effective programs run by Special Olympics Massachusetts and I want to do something to help. The Jolly Jaunt is a 5K RUN/WALK and 1K KIDS FUN RUN to benefit Special Olympics Massachusetts. I have set a goal to raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics Massachusetts in my geographical area. Special Olympics athletes never pay a cent to participate in any of the 26 different sports offered, so we are raising critical dollars to fund the year-round sports training and athletic competitions for athletes in Massachusetts with intellectual disabilities. You can help me reach this goal by making a donation online. Click on the link below and you will be taken to my personal donation page where you can make a secure online credit card donation. Any amount would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much for your support! Together we can improve the lives of some very courageous and dedicated athletes in Massachusetts with intellectual disabilities and other closely related developmental disabilities. Your donation will help to provide them with programs and services that will bring happiness and pride in all that they do.
Regards, John Young
Ironman Arizona
Congrats to Jodi “All-Iron” Frank (14:15:48) and Peter “Stealth-Warrior” Wronski (13:51:16) who both finished IM Arizona on a very windy day (15-20mph) on the bike and some unusual cool Arizona water temps (60). There are no easy IMs, no matter where they are in the country oar globe. If a course doesn’t have hills, it has wind, if it doesn’t have rough seas it has cool temps or currents, any way you slice it it’s a huge full day accomplishment at any venue. I believe that’s IM number 11 for Jodi, these are becoming like entering a 5k for her where she can wake up on any given day and jump into an IM and is ready to roll. Peter is getting up there as well, I think this was possibly IM no 6. Congrats to both on managing some unexpected conditions in Arizona and spreading some Black & Orange out West.
Philadelphia Marathon (.Philadelphia, PA)If you're looking for a big city marathon experience, but want the conveniences of a smaller more personal marathon, Philadelphia may be the marathon for you. For Capt P, Denise Murphy and Kelley Philbin, this race gets two thumbs up. Logistically this race was so easy, you could walk to the start from almost any downtown hotel, you could arrive 30 min before the start and still get to your coral location, and was so organized at the finish and yet it was still a race with 20,000 runners (9,000 marathoners, 11,000 half). In addition, the race/accommodations/food didn’t empty your pocketbook, it had weather that can be guaranteed at 40 to 60 degrees, and a course with a nice mix of flat and rolling terrain to mix up the muscle groups and keep you moving. For a 7am start (due to the first 7 miles through the City), the crowds were great, music and inspiration were where you needed it and there were plenty of water/Gatorade and GU stops (and even one beer and brownies aid station at mile 19!). We all raced well and within our limits as Denise PR’d with at 4:16:03 (and would have hit her sub 4:15 goal if she would stop waiting in port-a-potty lines and just pee behind something like 80% of the other racers!), Kelley was off her typical marathon of 4hrs or less due to a month long sinus infection that kept her from running the past several weeks, but she kept it within her limits and finished comfortably in a little over 5 hours. Capt P did not want to run this, was talked into it by his wife, whined about it all year, but couldn’t stop from having the best weekend a marathon could bring. From the running to dining to drinking to sight seeing, it was that much fun, and cruised in with a 3:22:56 BQ. Take that sold out Boston 2011!(chip on the shoulder? Me?) Philly's course treats you to historical landmarks like the Liberty Bell, as well as the natural beauty of scenic sections along the Schuylkill River. And, if you still have some energy left at the finish line, you can do your best "Rocky" imitation by running up the Philadelphia Museum of Art's steps. If you aren’t a big fan of marathons, but still want to do one to say you did it, let Philly bring you in. Congrats Denise and Kelley on a great race weekend.
Lowell Shedd Park Cyclocross (Lowell, MA)
For 9 Comp racers it was a great day team day at Shedd Park in Lowell (unless you’re Matt with a race ending flat). Is there no justice for this guy?! Will the Cross gods please give this guy a break!!. As Capt Ironmuppet Maw states, “great volunteers, awesome teammates with some great results, good 'cross friends, great post race beers on a perfect fall day! It's a great time of year to be a bike racer! And that's a tight knit team in that YouTube video... 4 of the same team all in one pack. Too bad we can't do that at the front of a race!” Actually there were 10 Comp racers counting our youthful racer, 10-year old Madeleine (Scott’s daughter). Comp had 10 racers in 4 race categories and several Comp cheerleaders (Capt Jen, Andrea B.) on the sidelines. First up was the CAT4 race with 7 Comp racers flying orange all over the course and heavy in the middle. In a field of 98, Scott “Wooly” Wilson is still solid up front with a 13th place finish, followed by a flurry in the middle (see the YouTube below for action) with Iron-Jay Curry in 46th, Dan Super-Cooper in 56th, Capt Ironmuppet Maw in 59th and Eric “Quiet-Assassin” Whewell coming off a month long injury in 63rd. Speaking of injuries, Todd “Gooseman” Crumb as in the field but I think I heard he had a bit a wrist injury that in a cross race is something you don’t want to have, but still stuck it out to join in the fun rolling in a little further back. And then there’s Matt “Lean-Mean-Machine” Garceau. And he is looking lean, and is mean on the course, but was let down by mechanical problems and was unable to finish. In the Masters 55+ race, Bill “Bucketlist” Morse returned to cyclocross racing for the first time in 33 years! He may have finished near the back of the pack, but you couldn’t have guessed that with the smile on his face (and he rarely smiles) enjoying the cheers of his Comp teammates throughout the race. In the Cat1-3Masters 35+ Kurt “Pure-Power” Schmidt does what he does best, power to the front, finishing 12th in a field of 50. No matter what type of bike race it is, Kurt can always be found near the top. Finally in the Juniors 10-14 race, young Madeleine showed the boys she can hang tough with them finishing 12th. Look out when she’s old enough to enter a girls only race.
TURKEY TROTS
7th Annual Wild Turkey 5 miler (Salem, MA)
Another record turn out here with over 1,500 runners. This race was 180 just 6 years ago. Didn’t have time to look up all the results, so I’ll give what I know…. We had 13 Comp racers from the front runners Iron-Jay Curry 120th and Artie “one-man-party” Gray at 130th (and 3rd in Age! That’s 3 for 3 in the last 3 races!), and Tim “Slim-Speedy-Kona” Clarke, to the middle of the pack and beyond, Richie “Metallurgist” Lewis, Big-Stu Greeley, Denise Murphy, Kelley Philbin, Deb Lewis, Mighty John Young (another PR! Congrats!), Colleen Greeley, to the back and off the back at Erin “House-Boy” Bennett wheeled his two little princess daughters (and his bad back) through most of the race and Capt P tried to keep a 6 month old pup Tula to a limited puppy 2 miles (she wasn’t happy about being cut short). Weather was great, post race food was great, just a great day.
23rd Feaster Five (Andover, MA)
Jordy “Hotlanta” Wetzel didn’t get the e-mail on the local Salem race and headed up to Andover for the 5mi/5k/1k Feaster Five with thousands and thousands of runners. In the 5k Jordy showed his is not just a power biker with a sweet time of 19:30 (we got to get this boy in the early season duathlons!), for 51st overall, 5th out of 328 age group. Nice race there Jordy.
Derry Turkey Run (Derry, NH)
Further North, Kristen “KCherbs” Cherbonneau did the Derry Turkey Trot with Iron-mom Heather volunteering as she ran a bit more later (training for Boston ), Kid-Kosmo Boyle joined in for the post 7mi training run. I don’t have KCherbs results but I’m sure she was running hot up front.
To anyone else that did a Turkey Trot that I don’t know about, congrats on burning off some pre-feast calories on a beautiful running day.
