RACE NEWS:

Jan 8thOlde Salem Greens Snowshoe Race (Salem, MA) www.salemroadraces.com

Fabulous Comp/DRR showing at the Olde Salem Greens Snowshoe race as 100 shoers kicked off the season. With thin cover threatening the race, our sister snowshoe club DRR Captains (me, Dan Cooper, Bill Morse, Jay Curry and Mike Doyle) stepped up the work on the course and spent 3 days (Wed, Fri PM and Sat pre-race) shoveling, grooming and marking to ensure all had a happy race on the 90% covered snowshoe course. And the survey said “We loved the course! Great mix of flat and hills! DRR did a great job with what little snow you had”. A nice pat on the back to DRR! And great organization of the race by Comp member and race director, Eileen Dunn. The Comp Orange (as DRR Orange) was all throughout the field, but heaviest at the front as 4 placed in the top 20 (5 if you include friend-of-Comp and DRR member Chris Smith with the fastest DRR placement of 9th overall. Following Chris was Capt P Smith (11th), Matt Garceau (12th ), Jay Curry (16th), Dan Cooper (18th), Art Gray (26th), Bill Morse (32nd), Capt Kurt Maw (35th), Richie Lewis (40th), Stu Greeley (60th), Tayler Smith (61) (yes that’s 3 Smiths so far, feels like a Matrix movie), and Heather Mackesy (83rd). The big effort goes to Matt Garceau, who after rolling his ankle in the first half mile still held a blistering pace for a 12th overall and just missed beating the Master Snowshoer (at least in age), Capt P. Big thanks to the Comp volunteers, Denise Murphy, Steph Cooper, Andrea Barlow and Capt Jen Linnane (and her cowbell).

Jan 9th – Weston Winter Duathlon (Weston, MA) New England Winter Triathlon Series www.WinterTriathlon.org

What would a winter Du or Tri be without some Comp blood in it?, just another race. But there was Comp blood so it was a banner race as 65 runner/XC-skiers took to the Weston Track. JP excelled again placing 18th overall, but if you asked him he would call himself….. slow. Come On! You’re a stud! As JP re-caps “ The race was fun but tough, I raced to my training level, which continues to be slow..” He’s just too modest, its tough to be in the top 20 in these races. Nancy Thompson finished 41st which has me thinking she was not no her ‘A’ game since she’s typically a top finisher at these things. She’s probably just warming up for the big Gunstock Winter Tri coming up in a couple weeks. Good luck Nan! I have a feeling big Paul Penaskovic may make a showing at Gunstock as well.

Jan 8th & 9th – Walt Disney Half, Full and Goofy Marathon Events (Orlando, FL)

So, Comp had some racers retreating to the warmth of the southern states……… Thanks Dawnie for the posting. If you missed it, here’s how Dawnie recapped the Disney Challenge and our Comp racers Dawnie, Bob and Bryce Desmarias, Jodi Frank, Peter Wronski, and Jonathan Mangsen,

“What a great year in Disney!!! The Incredibles started out by watching Bryce run the 5k in a lightning fast 24 minutes!!! They don't keep official records for the race but we believe he was in the top 10 kids and top 5 in his age group ... next on to the 1/2 ... bob and i ran this one with the kids getting up at 3am to cheer us on ... I of course was dressed in our orange and black and TIGGER outfit ... went out too hard following Bob but was able to hang in there for a PR of 1:38 good enough for 10/1800 in age; 103/12500 for woman and 500/22000 overall ;-) ... Last I volunteered for the full to see my college roomy complete not only her first full marathon but the Goofy Challenge - what a great day to cheer on the racers at the finish as I was able to see many locals I recognized including our own Jodi and Peter!!! Jodi did the goofy for the 5th time and this was Peter's 3rd both looked great coming through the finish. The last person we ran into wasn't at the race but at Epcot the next day - another B&O Jonathan Mangsen and Erin. All and all the week was a nice way to start off 2011 now looking forward to some snow-shoeing (okay not really cuz we all know I'd rather have stayed in FL!!!!
