Weekly Update!

NEWS SUMMARY

  • Sal “Aqua-Lung” Genovese digs for the weekend double-double with impressive finishes at Northfield Snowshoe and Stew Chase 15k roadrace. This boy is on a mission!
  • Iron-Jay Curry leads the Comp pack of 10 to the finish at the Great Stew Chase.
  • Paul “Clyde with Glide” Penaskovic showing he’s got the glide on the snow as well with another impressive finish at the Weston Winter Tri.
  • Comp is quicker than a Wikipedia search for info as Ken “Criterium” Thoman is bombarded with a pile of quick informative responses on TT bikes. This is one well informed team ready to dole out the info.
  • Salem Cycle’s “Dan the Man” and Capt Ironmuppet Maw dig up another super team bike deal, this time with Ritchey components. See the Team sheet attached. This offer only to Comp members.
  • Capt’n P goes under the knife. Will the doctors grant his wish for supersonic-bionic knees?
  • Snow – Where is it? There’s 44-inches of it in Philly this month (they don’t want it). There’s only 4-inches in Vancouver (they need it – flying it, trucking it for the Olympics). There has been so little in NH that snowshoe races are in a constant state of flux. What the hey?
  • Another great tip from Road Bike Rider, Standing safely on the bike for you and others in the pack. See article below. (Push forward when you stand. Ride several inches to one side of the rider in front of you in case they stand, a temporary wheel overlap is better than a wheel to wheel hit).

RACE NEWS:

Feb 6thWMAC Northfield Mt Snowshoe Race (Northfield, MA)

With the GSSS race cancelled, WMAC and Dave Dunham came thru with a great race out west. Northfield was essentially about 2.5 miles of tough climbing on x-country ski trails to the top of Nothfield Mtn, with about 1/3 mile of flat single track near the summit and then a long descent on the main service road to the finish. With only a couple of bare spots, the hard packed, icy trails made for fast conditions especially on the downhill sections. The race director Dave Dunham did make it a 5.3 miler despite the advertised 3..5 mi. Comp’s Bill Morse had serious doubts about the conditions with all the bare ground he was seeing on the drive out, but Dave D. made it work! 75 Snowshoers made it out, including some of the fastest WMAC racers from the western half of New England, and Comp was represented well with Sal “Aqua-Lung” Genovese coming in 27th and Bill “Bucket-List” Morse taking the 42nd slot. Nice shoein’ boys!

Feb 6th – Weston Ski Track Winter Tri, (Weston, MA) – 3rd of 4 races

This 3rd of 4 races had Comp’s trio of racers again of JP “got speedo” Peters, Paul “Clyde with Glide” Penaskovic and Nancy “got medal” Thomson doing battle. All were on the mark again as JP took #11 overall, 3rd Masters, Paul looking strong at #28 overall, and Nancy T at #36 overall, 1st Masters and 4th overall female. What a tri-fecta! For those that haven’t raced or witnessed a winter tri, here’s Paul’s take on it, …

“As for the Winter tri.... what can I say other than it's just like cyclocross, you’re red-lined. You start off running on snow (no snow shoes allowed) so depending on conditions (hard or soft snow) that can be challenging. We then proceed to mountain bike the same run course but we do more loops. We finish up with a skate ski or traditional cross country ski if you so choose but it's much slower. Of course all parts of the race are great. Temperature outside can really come into play on the mountain bike and of course wax choice. Temps at Weston were warmer on this one at 19 degree's but the wind made it feel like 0. Overall I really enjoy the race, the course and the people that are there are pretty friendly. It would be good to see more comp people there. It's a great way to stay loose over the winter months.”

Let’s get some more Black & Orange out there!!

Feb 7th – Great Stew Chase 10 miler (Lynn, MA) www.stewchase.com

What would be the Great Stew Chase 15k without some cold and windy weather? Just another race. So bring it on, it was cold and windy enough to keep everyone’s pace down and leaving all moaning and groaning and fighting for speed. Congrats to Comp’s terrific-ten that joined 350 other runners in this annual 10-mi warm-up to Boston. Comp was lead by Iron-Jay Curry coming in at #70 with a 7:30 pace, closely followed by the double-duty man Sal Genovese at #88 (7:49/mi) and Tim “Slim-Speedy” Clarke at #99 (7:55/mi). Joining the front trio were #168 Paul Copeland, #179 Dan Super-Cooper, #197 Uncle-skinny Kev Curry, #238 Denise Murphy, #239 Steph Cooper, #241 Richie Lewis, and #281 Big Stu Greeley (who was heard by Denise at mile 4 as to saying how much he was truly enjoying running 10-mi on a cold and windy day instead of a newspaper, recliner, coffee and stogie at home. Did I get that wrong?
