RACE NEWS:
Jan 30th - Snowshoe Northeast Regional Qualifier for Nationals, (Center Sandwich, NH )
Last Saturday was supposed to be the Sidehiller 4-miler in Sandwich NH, but poor snow conditions turned it into a circuit race of 3 laps in-and-out of the fairgrounds for 5.2 miles. The course lacked the extra hills but there were no bare spots to be found on this fast course. With Nationals so close-by this year (Syracuse, NY), the Center Sandwich race had a record turnout of 91 finishers even though temps hovered around ZERO for the whole race. This race had the cream of the crop of New England’s finest trail and snowshoe runners. Two Comp Racers made the race and two Comp Racers qualified for Nationals. Bill “Bucket-List” Morse finished in 50th on the redline-cardiac course, qualifying for his 8th? 9th? Nationals, and this will be the 6th Bill attends. His best finish? Bronze in 2003 at 9,000ft in Salt Lake City. When the conditions are tough, there are none tougher. Sal “Aqua-Lung” Genovese turned the race into a duathlon, a race to get there, and a race to finish, as his “human” garmin was a little off on the travel time estimate. Sal jumped on course 9 minutes after the start, proceeded to pass 32 racers and finish in 59th, still qualifying for nationals. I’m sure Sal’s heart was pumping at threshold all the way up Rt 93 and through the finish. Mocha-Frenzy supplied the post race tasty soups and baked goods. Congrats Bill and Sal. www.dungeonrockracing.
Jan 30th - Harpoon Brewery Indoor Time Trial, Boston, MA
Comprehensive has started early and often this season and this weekend at the Harpoon ITT, was no exception. The opening round of TT's saw newest recruit Matt Sullivan clocking a blistering 21:55 and briefly holding the lead in his heat only to be caught on the hill. The next round saw IronMuppet Maw and another new recruit David Sullivan hit the "road". Doing his best to improve his time from last year, the Muppet turned in a marginally quicker performance that was 15 seconds faster than last at 23:45, while David S suffered through, but made up for a tough day on the computrainer with a few delicious Harpoons. In the next TT, Eric "The Silent Assassin" Whewell, with a little encouragement from the Muppet, clocked in at 23:42ish. Next up were the ladies, and what a show they put on, each one going up against, not only the brutal mental conditions that come with pushing on a Computrainer, but also having to go up against the Elite Women! Our ladies didn't disappoint, and like a phoenix, coming out of the ashes, Renee “Nay-Nay” Maxwell clocked in a fast 24:40.30 for an average wattage of 203! Look out ladies, she's back! Not to be out done, were Heather "Ironmom" Mackesy and Capt Jen "TTing on a 'cross bike" Linnane. Heather, fresh off a September Ironman, turned the pedals in anger to clock in at a solid 132 W effort and Jen, crushing her time from last year, knocked off 2 minutes from last year clocking in a 140W effort! And finally, while most of the support crew had to leave due to excessive consumption of sponsorship goods, Warren "Flash” MacPhail (aka “You may think I'm only fast on the run MacPhail") stomped out a 22:01 (missing Matt’s top mark by 6 sec) to round out the day! A great day by everyone that made it and if you haven't put this race on your calendar for next year, you just don't know what you are missing!
