RACE NEWS: (I didn’t have time to check websites for standings and I can’t check sport related sites from work, so I’m relying on the reports that were sent to me. I apologize if I miss anyone. Thank you all for sending the reports)
May 2nd – Alcatraz Triathlon (San Francisco Bay)
Comp finished well and were full of smiles at this west cost event. As Jumpin’ Joe Geringer, Iron-Jay Curry and Slim-Speedy Tim Clarke crossed the under 3 hours, Ironmom Heather MacKesy crossed with her ring-bearing escort Kid-Kosmo Dave Boyle (the future Mr Ironmom). What an eventful day for this crew. All I keep hearing is this a race for everyones bucketlist. Iron-Jay’s quick recount, “This race was incredible!!! Best triathlon I have ever done. Very scenic and challenging. Couldn't believe I was jumping off this boat into the 55 degree water, swimming the 1.5 miles of currents and small chop, running .5 mile to the bike. Biking 18 miles of some steep climbs and fast technical descents. The 8 mile run incorporated about 10%road, 80% trail and 10%sand. The talk a lot about the sand stairs which were very steep and forced everyone to walk, even the pro's. But there was also another set of stairs to run up that were cement and wood, and had lots of twists and turns. You also ran through an old tunnel that on the way out was about 6 feet at the entrance, but about 4 feet at the end. So you had to duck. I highly recommend people to do this race. What a feeling to know that I have now Escaped from Alcatraz!! This race will be on either ABC, CBS, or NBC sometime within the next month or so. Plus, seeing all the pro's Hunter Kemper, Chris McCormack, Andy Potts, Leanda Cave, Michelee Jones, etc.... PRICELESS!!!” (and maybe we’ll see that proposal on the video footage!)
May 1st-2nd – The Cape Relay (Quincy to P-Town 200 mi)
Congrats Roz as she helped her mixed-ultra relay team (3 male, 3 female) to a 2nd place finish in this 200 mi event. The 200-mi teams are typically run by 12 person teams, but that’s not challenging enough as Roz and her “Training Room” team bumped up to the “ultra” category using only 6 runners. Roz ran over 29 miles in this event in 3 legs. Roz moves onto her biggest event of the year as she does some pre-op testing this week to prep her for the biggest sacrifice of love possible, the donation of an organ to her father on May 11th. We all send you best wishes Roz, the team is with you.
May 2nd – Trek the Seacoast to benefit American Lung Association
I’m not sure how long this all day event was, but it covered the NH coast as another Comp Racer, Nicole De Haven, goes the distance for Charity. Great to see Black & Orange at these events. As Nicole recounts “ the ride was great... reminded me of the tour de cure i did a few years back. Amazing scenery and fabulous volunteers. This was the first Cycle the Seacoast and, i must say, it went off very well. I raised $250, the minimum but I think that is because i usually hit people up in the fall for the autumn escape (also for the American Lung Association.). Congrats Nicole.
May 2nd – FIRM Sheriff’s Sprint Pool Tri (Ludlow, MA)
At the FIRM Sheriffs Sprint Pool Tri, Uber Big Ring Don Vescio rang in the fastest bike split by over a minute (sounds like he’s slowing down), as he teamed up with Seth Hanapole (skipped breakfast this time) in the water and Chewy (Jonathan M) on the run. As Don reports from the race, “ Seth H had an excellent swim and Jonathan ran a great race as we won the all-male team and the overall team title by over 6 ½ minutes. The guys did well.” Congrats Black & Orange.
May 1st and 2nd – Bike Weekend Recap
NYC Weekend Track Omnium (NYC, NY): Sat/Sun - Steve Pelletier and Todd Crumb took on the Big Apple at the NYC Track Omnium, and the Apple bit back. Both competed in the “Kilo” (1000 Meter Time trial) and improved in personal times, did the Team Sprint (recruiting a 3rd that didn’t help them much), a 12-lap mass-start points race, a 7-lap Scratch Race and then onto Match Sprints (cat and mouse track sprints). Wow that’s a lot of races!. All results were in the middle, with neither real happy with the results but as Steve puts it “ All in all it was a good weekend. Great to hang out with my buddy Todd, great to get back on the track, great to ride with faster/better riders. I'm confident we'll get some better results as the season goes on. For us it's almost as much fun competing as it is winning...almost. As such the trip was well worthwhile.”
Blue Hill Circuit Race (Milton, MA): Sun – In the 21 mi CAT 5 Tim Curley road a strong race to a middle of the pack sprint finish in 23rd. In the 42 mi Masters CAT 1-4, newcomer Jordy Wetzel is warming up the legs also with a middle of the pack finish at 31st. Once his move from Atlanta is all set look for Jordy to head up the field.
Wayne Elliot Memorial Circuit Race (Merrimack, MA): Sat – In the 33mi Cat 4 Race, Scott Wilson hung on for an impressive 19th place finish, as Jordy Wetzel pulled a double for the weekend with another mid-pack finish in 29th in the Masters CAT 1-4.
Wompatuck Circuit Race (Hingham, MA): Wed – Steve Pelletier came back from his NYC track weekend to take an impressive 5th place finish in the C race. Sweet.
